Adams' career night lifts Lions over Henderson State, 79-72

Pittsburg, Kan. - The Missouri Southern basketball team went on a 23-8 run to end the first half and despite being outscored in the second half, defeated Henderson State 79-72 tonight in the first game of the Chatters/Comfort Inn PSU Classic held at Pittsburg State University.

The Lions (6-0) are 6-0 for the first time since the team started the 1999-2000 season 9-0.

Southern led 22-20 at the nine minute mark of the first half after a layup from Henderson State's (1-4) Kyle Oldham cut the lead to two. Keane Thomann, however, made good on layup on the next trip down the court and started a commanding run for the Lions that saw the team go into the locker room, up 45-28 at the half.

Southern pushed its lead to 21 (55-34) after a three point play from Vincent Ateba with 16 minutes left in the second half. The Reddies, however, began to claw back and on the heels of an 35-18 run over the next 14 minutes, cut the Lions lead to just four (73-69) with 2:31 left to play. The lead was three at 75-72 just one minute later, but four points over the final minute from Skyler Bowlin secured the Southern victory.

Jason Adams had a career high 17 points in 17 minutes tonight, going 6-9 from the field. Matt Monroe added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench, while DaRell Crittendon, Ateba and Mariun Price had nine points each.

Southern will conclude the tournament tomorrow evening with a game against Evangel at 5 pm. The Crusaders defeated the host Pittsburg State tonight in overtime, 98-94.
