Lions conclude classic with 82-59 win over Lincoln

Senior forward Vincent Ateba tied a career high with 24 points and led four Lions in double-figure scoring, as Southern defeated visiting Lincoln University 82-59 in the final game of the 2008 Freeman Sports Medicine/Chris Tucker Memorial Classic.

Southern (4-0) trailed 20-18 at the eight minute mark of the first half after two free throw's from the Blue Tigers' (2-2) Kyle Wilde. The Lions tied it at 20 on a layup from Jason Adams and took the lead for good on a jumper from Adams the next time down the court.

After a jumper from Lincoln's Ricky Jackson cut the Southern lead to two at 28-26 with four minutes left, the Lions went on a 11-4 run to go into the locker room up 39-30 at the half. Southern shot 46 percent from the field in the first half and limited Lincoln to just 33 percent.

The Lions started the second half on a 10-1 run to push their lead to 18 (49-31) at the 16 minute mark. The lead grew to 21 after a three-point play from Ateba made the score 56-35 with 11:40 left to play. The lead was as high as 25 twice, the last after a jumper from Joe Fauvergue made the score 82-57 with just under two minutes left.

Ateba led all scorers with 24 points and eight rebounds. He was 8-13 from the floor and 8-11 from the free throw line. He also had five assists. DaRell Crittendon and Mariun Price each scored 11 points. Crittendon went 5-8 from the field and added two blocks. Matt Monroe had 10 points and five boards off the bench, while Chris Scruggs added eight rebounds and Skyler Bowlin had seven assists.

The Lions had 24 assists to just eight turnovers and shot 50 percent from the field.

The Lions will be back in action this Tuesday (November 25) night as they play host to Northeastern State at 7 pm.
