Lions lead from opening tip in 93-44 win over Central Bible

The Missouri Southern basketball team out scored visiting Central Bible 53-21 in the second half as every Lion scored in the game, defeating the Spartans, 93-44 tonight at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (2-0) led 10-2 at the 17 minute mark after a layup from Chris Scruggs. Central Bible (2-6) cut the lead to five (10-5) after a three from Caleb Willis. That would be as close as the score would get. The Southern lead was seven (27-20) after a jumper from Vincent Ateba at the five minute mark, but the Lions went on a 13-0 run to push the lead to 20 after a dunk from Ateba made the score 40-20. The lead would be 40-23 at the half.

The Lions shot 50 percent in the first half, but the Spartans hung in, shooting 40 percent from the field, as well.

Southern opened the second half on a 16-0 run and pushed it's lead to 56-23 after a layup from Jason Adams at the 14 minute mark. The lead hit 46 after a fast-break layup from Tony Webb made the score 75-29 with 8:26 to go. Two free throws from Mariun Price gave the Lions their biggest lead of the game (52) as Southern led 81-29 with just under six minutes left.

The Lions forced 28 Central Bible turnovers and converted those miscues into 40 points. Southern out scored the Spartans 58-14 in the paint and had 14 fast-break points. The Lions' bench out scored Central Bible 43-2. Southern shot a sizzling 58 percent from the field in the game.

Ateba led all scorers with 18 points on 7-11 from the field. Skyler Bowlin had 13 points and six assists, while Adams scored 13 points in 10 minutes on 6-9 shooting from the field. Webb had 12 points and four assists to go with three steals. Scruggs had six points, six rebounds and five steals in the game.

Southern will now prepare to host its annual Freeman Sports Medicine/Chris Tucker Memorial Classic this weekend on Friday and Saturday. Pittsburg State, as well as Mid-American Christian and Lincoln University will come to the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center for the two-day event. The Lions square off with Mid-American Christian at 7 pm on Friday night and will play Lincoln at 7 pm on Saturday.
