Lions sign two high school players

Joplin, Mo
. - Missouri Southern men's basketball coach Robert Corn has announced the signing of Chris Baker and Jordan Talbert to national letters of intent to attend Southern and play basketball beginning in the 2009-10 season.

Baker, a 5-10, 181 pound guard, is a native of Columbia, Maryland and played for coach Karl Friedham at Hammond High School where he started all four years as the team's point guard.

The 2008-09 Howard County (MD) Player of the Year, Baker scored 20.7 points per game, while pulling down 7.3 rebounds, 3.9 steals and dishing out 5.4 assists. He drained 56 three pointers and ranked second in both points and assists per game in the county. An All-County selection in 2007-08 as well, Baker scored 21.5 points per game to lead the county, while pulling down 6.8 rebounds, and leading the county with 3.9 steals. He drained 42 three pointers and averaged 3.1 assists per game.

A 1,000 point scorer, Baker holds the Hammond High School record for steals in a game (10) and scoring in a game (39). He is the second leading scorer in the history of the school. His father Clarence Baker is a former football player at the University of Illinois. Chris is the son of Clarence and Stephanie Baker and plans on majoring in international business at Southern.

"Chris is an exciting young man and I feel he can really com in and battle right away for playing time," Corn said. "He is extremely quick and a good shooter and really fits our style of play, both offensively and defensively. He's an extremely good three point shooter and I think his presence will allow us to use Skyler (Bowlin) and Mariun (Price) off the ball more. It should be an exciting competition next season."

Talbert is a 6-6, 200 pound forward from Little Rock, Ark. where he played for coach Oliver Fitzpatrick at Little Rock Central High School. Talbert started for three years at forward for the Tigers and earned four varsity letters.

He averaged 12.0 points and 5.0 rebounds as a senior and helped the Tigers to a 12-11 record. Talbert is the son of Tony Talbert and Faye Perry and plans on being a pre-dental major at Southern.

"We're really excited to have Jordan join our program here at Southern," Corn said. "He is a fine quality athlete and came very highly recommended to us. He has a tremendous upside and is very accustomed to winning, which is something we try to look for in recruits. He fits that bill, perfectly. He is a forward that can shoot the ball, but also has the size and presence to rebound and be the type of defender we look for."
