Last second blocked shot lifts Central Missouri over Southern 77-76 in overtime

Box Score

Kansas City, Mo.
- Trailing by one with the final seconds ticking off the clock, Mariun Price's running layup was blocked by Central Missouri's Alex Moosman and the eighth ranked Mules advanced to the second round of the MIAA Tournament, defeating Southern 77-76 in overtime tonight in Kansas City.

Price led the Southern (19-12) scoring attack with 18 points on 7-13 shooting from the field and 2-3 from long range. Vincent Ateba scored 15 on 6-9 shooting, while DaRell Crittendon scored 13. Skyler Bowlin scored nine and dished out eight assists, while Matt Monroe scored eight and pulled down seven rebounds.

Central (24-4) led the entire overtime period and the lead was four after a bucket from Santjay Watts made the score 77-73 with 18 seconds left. A three from Bowlin the next trip down made the score 77-76 with nine seconds left. The Lions fouled Joe Young on the in bounds, sending the Mule's senior to the free-throw line for two shots. A 78 percent free-throw shooter on the season, Young had made his previous two attempts in the game, but this time around, Young missed both free throws and Ateba came down with the rebound.

The outlet pass went to Bowlin and the Lions sophomore All-MIAA performer hit Price, who was streaking from the left wing, but Moosman came in and blocked Price's shot as time expired to seal the one-point win for Central.

A tight game throughout, the Lions fought from five down with two minutes to go in the game. A jumper from Crittendon cut the Central Missouri lead to two with just under two minutes left and a layup from Jason Adams with under ten seconds left tied the game and forced overtime.

The Lions shot 47 percent and held the Mules to just 35 percent from the field, but a deciding advantage on the boards was the difference in the game. The Mules out-rebounded Southern 55-32, including 23 offensive rebounds and were just three boards shy of the MIAA Tournament record.

Southern's season ends at 19-12, just one win shy of coach Robert Corn's seventh twenty-win season. The year started off right, as the Lions roared to a school-record 12-straight wins to open the slate. Southern was ranked as high as 10th nationally, and went un-defeated to win the Puerto Rico/Lexmark Holiday tournament in December.
