FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 12, 2009 Lions fall at home to Fort Hays, 67-59 Box Score Joplin, Mo. - The 12th ranked Missouri Southern basketball team forced three turnovers on three straight Fort Hays' possessions with under 47 seconds left, but couldn't capitalize and fell to the Tigers tonight, 67-59 at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Southern (15-3, 5-3 MIAA) went up 23-15 after a three from Skyler Bowlin at the 10 minute mark of the first half. The Lions led by seven (27-20) at the eight minute mark, but a 7-0 run from the Tigers (10-5, 3-5 MIAA) over the next three minutes tied the game at 27 on a three pointer from Charles Robinson. The game was tied at 31 after a pair of free-throws from Vincent Ateba, but Fort Hays finished the half on a 6-0 run to go up 37-31 at the break. Bowlin had 13 points to lead all scorers at the half, scoring all of his points in the first ten minutes of the half. Two straight layups from Mariun Price brought the Lions to within three points (42-39) and a back-to-back layups from Bowlin and Ateba on the next two trips down gave the Lions a 43-42 lead with just under 15 minutes to play. A three from the Tigers' Tyrone Evans at the 11 minute mark and a pair of free throws a minute later from Jonathan Blake gave Hays its largest lead of the game to that point (eight) at 56-48 with just under ten minutes left. A pair of free-throws from Robinson with just under four minutes gave Hays a ten point advantage (61-51). A pair of free throws from Bowlin and a jumper in the lane from Matt Monroe cut the Hays' lead to just six (61-55) with 1:50 to go on the clock. The Lions' defense put the team in position to make a comeback in the final two minutes, forcing six turnovers, but Southern couldn't capitalize. Bowlin led all scorers with 22 points. Ateba had 10 points and five rebounds. Southern forced 28 turnovers and scored 25 points off the miscues, and shot 82 percent from the free-throw line. The Lions will be back in action this Saturday, January 17 when they travel to Omaha, Nebraska to take on Nebraska-Omaha at 7 pm. |
