Lions' defense shores up 98-49 win over Maryville in first round of Chris Tucker

 The Missouri Southern defense came up strong for the second-straight game and limited Maryville University to just 19 second half points, while forcing 40 turnovers and stealing the ball 24 times, en route to a 98-49 win over the Saints in the first round of the Freeman Sports Medicine/Chris Tucker Memorial Classic tonight.

Southern (4-0) started slow, trailing 10-7 at the 15 minute mark of the first half. The Lions tied the game and took the lead on back-to-back Tony Webb free-throws just five minutes later. The lead was ten after a jumper from Matt Monroe and 15 at the break as TJ Britton hit a layup with 55 seconds left in the half.

Maryville (1-3) shot 41 percent from the floor in the first half, but came out of the locker room, ice cold and the Lions opened up the second half on a 26-6 run to push the lead to 35 (71-36) after a layup from Britton at the 11 minute mark.

The lead grew to 49 (98-49) after a free throw from Joey Savage with just over a minute remaining.

Southern limited the Saints to just 27 percent shooting in the second half, forcing 21 turnovers and claiming 13 steals in the second half alone.

Britton led four Lions with double-figures in scoring as the senior poured in 15 points and added six rebounds. Webb had 13 points, while both Stanley Titsworth and Skyler Bowlin had 12 points a piece. Octavius Hawkins had a game high nine rebounds to go with seven points and four assists.

Every player on the bench scored tonight for the Lions.

Southern shot 46 percent from the field and 40 percent from long range, draining 77 percent of their free throws.

The Lions will now take on Mid-America Christian University tomorrow at 7 pm in the final game of the Classic. The Evangels lost earlier tonight to Pittsburg State, 83-61. PSU will take on Maryville at 5 pm.
