Big second-half lifts Tulsa over Southern, 89-60 in exhibition play

Tulsa, Okla. -  The University of Tulsa shot 69 percent from the field in the second half tonight, en route to a 89-60 victory in exhibition play in front of 4,376 fans at the Reynolds Center.

Vincent Ateba started the scoring for the Lions with a turn around jumper to put the Lions up 2-0. A three from Skyler Bowlin, his second of the game, cut the Tulsa lead to 15-10 at the 11 minute mark.

A jumper from Tulsa's Rod Earls, however, pushed the Golden Hurricane's lead to 21-10 with eight minutes left. Bowlin hit another three on the next possession giving him 11 points. A jumper from Matt Monroe made the score 26-15, but Tulsa's Glenn Andrews hit a running jumper the next time down the floor, pushing the lead to 13 for the Golden Hurricane and forcing a Southern timeout.

Mark Dannenmueller hit back-to-back threes to get the score to 33-21 with just under two minutes remaining. He added a free throw the next trip down to cut the lead to 11 at 33-22, but Tulsa's Andrews made two free throws as time expired to make the score 39-22 at the half.

Back-to-back three's for Tulsa gave the Golden Hurricane a 61-35 lead with 13:21 left in the game, forcing a Southern timeout. Another three from TU's Justin Hurtt, along with a layup from Brett McDade gave Tulsa a 68-35 lead. A three from Matt Monroe stopped a 16-0 run for Tulsa.

The Lions were led in scoring by Bowlin's 18 points. He shot 7-12 from the field, including 4-8 from long range. Ateba had 11 points and five rebounds, while Tony Webb added 10 points and three assists.

Earls and Andrews had 18 and 17 points, respectively for the Golden Hurricane as Tulsa outscored the Lions 50-38 in the second half.

The Lions will be back in action this Saturday, November 10 when they play host to an exhibition against Livin' The Dream at 3 pm in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
