FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 16, 2008 Lions fall 85-75 at SBU in battle of first place teams Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Missouri Southern basketball team got double-figure scoring from four different individuals, but Southwest Baptist countered with four of their own, including three with double-doubles as the Bearcats defeated Southern 85-75 tonight in a battle for first place in the MIAA. Southern (16-7, 10-4 MIAA) fell down 12-4 early in the game after a layup from Tristan Steele gave SBU (18-4, 11-3) an eight point lead four minutes into the game. A layup from Vincent Ateba, however, capped a 10-0 run by the Lions to go up 14-12 with 13:13 left to go in the first. SBU's Jim Grabowski hit a running layup just two minutes later to cap a Bearcat 7-0 run as SBU went back up 21-14. The Lions re-gained the lead at 33-32 after a three by freshman Skyler Bowlin, his second in a row, with five minutes to go in the half. A late layup from TJ Britton cut the Bearcat lead to one at 41-40 at the half. A three point play from Octavius Hawkins gave the Lions a three point lead (48-45) four minutes into the second half. It would be the last lead Southern held, as a three from Grabowski gave the Bearcats a 50-42 lead at the 14 minute mark and SBU led for the remainder of the game. Ateba led the Lions in scoring with 20 points on 9-20 shooting from the field. Hawkins scored 16 points, while Bowlin and Webb scored 15 and 14, respectively. Grawbowski, Matt Rogers and D'Ante Harris all recorded double-doubles for the Bearcats with Grawboski leading the way, scoring 24 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Rogers nearly missed a triple double with 23 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks, while Harris nearly missed a triple of his own with 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Southern will be back in action this Wednesday night when the Lions play host to Central Missouri at 7:30 pm in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. |
