FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 9, 2008 Lions take out Tigers, 72-61 to remain in second place in the MIAA Box Score Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions missed their first nine shots of the game, but rebounded and put away the visiting Fort Hays State Tigers tonight, 72-62 in front of more than 1,900 fans at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Southern (15-6, 9-3 MIAA) was ice cold from the field to start the game as the Lions missed nine in a row before two free throws from Octavius Hawkins broke the drought. Southern wouldn't score it's first field goal until the 12 minute mark when a layup from Tony Webb cut the Tigers lead to 10-4. Hays (13-7, 6-6 MIAA) pushed its lead to 13-4 at the 11 minute mark after a three from Corbin Kuntzch. However, the Lions went on an 18-11 run over the next nine minutes to take their first lead of the game (25-24) after a layup from TJ Britton. A dunk from Britton with just under a minute to go and two free throws from Vincent Ateba with time winding down, gave the Lions a 29-26 lead at the break. The Lions came out of the locker room on fire. As has been the case most of the season, the defensive pressure led to points and Southern started the second half on a 35-12 run and pushed its lead to 54-38 at the ten minute mark of the half after a free throw from Ateba. The lead moved to 20 (63-43) after a pair of free throws from Webb with five minutes to go. The Tigers would not quit and went on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the Southern lead to ten (63-53). The Lions pushed the lead back to 16 when a three from Tyler Ryerson made the score 72-56 with just over a minute to go and despite a late 5-0 run from Hays, the Lions won their ninth conference game of the year. Webb continued his hot scoring as of late. The junior scored 22 points on 8-16 shooting, including a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. During the Lions' current four-game winning streak, Webb is averaging 18.5 points per game and two steals per game as the Lions have forced an average of 11.5 more turnovers per game than their opponents. Ateba scored 19 on 4-9 shooting from the field, but was nearly perfect at the line shooting 11-12 from the charity stripe. Skyler Bowlin had 10 points. Kuntzch had 12 points to lead the Tigers, and Tyrone Evans scored 11. The Lions forced 31 turnovers tonight against the Tigers, scoring 36 points off the miscues.
