FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 6, 2008 Lions sweep season series with Washburn, winning 65-56 at home Box Score Joplin, Mo. - A three from Skyler Bowlin at the 14:20 minute mark of the first half put the Missouri Southern Lions on top and gave them a lead the team wouldn't relinquish as the Lions led for all but five minutes tonight, defeating Washburn, 65-56 to compete the season sweep against the Ichabods. Southern (14-6, 8-3 MIAA) has now won four in a row against Washburn equaling the team's longest winning streak against the Ichabods. Washburn (12-8, 4-7 MIAA) opened the game strong and led 5-2 after a three from Andrew Meile at the 17 minute mark. A jumper from Vincent Ateba tied the game at five just 30 seconds later and Bowlin's three gave Southern the lead, one they wouldn't give up the rest of the night. Washburn got as close as one twice in the first half, the last time with 6:28 left when Darnell Kimble made the score 18-17. The Lions, however, went on a 13-4 run to end the half, up 31-21. The Southern lead grew to 15 (42-27) after an Ateba jumper. It would again reach 15 after a pair of free throws from Matt Monroe. The Lions were led in scoring by Webb's 21 points. The junior shot 7-14 from the field and 5-7 from the free-throw line and added five assists and four steals. Ateba scored 11 on 5-8 shooting, while Bowlin and Octavius Hawkins had eight apiece. Hawkins had 10 rebounds and three assists. Kimble led the Bods with 16 points, while Meile had 11. The Lions forced 28 Washburn turnovers and scored 32 points off the miscues, nearly half the nightly output. Southern is still alone in second place in the MIAA as Southwest Baptist defeated Missouri Western 84-72 tonight. The Lions will be back in action this Saturday, February 9 in the final game of a three game home stand when they welcome in the Fort Hays Tigers to the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Tip off is slated for 7:30 pm. |
