Box Score

Joplin, Mo. -
The Missouri Southern Lions used a 26-8 run to start the second half and cruised to a 77-61 win over visiting Truman State today in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (13-6, 7-3 MIAA) held a 16-12 lead at the 8:28 mark of the first half after a jumper from junior forward Matt Monroe. The Bulldogs (4-15, 3-7 MIAA), however, erased that lead and tied the game after a three point play from Alex Henderson. A jumper from Mark Misiewicz gave Truman a two point advantage the next time down the court.

The Lions would tie it up at 26 on a layup from freshman guard TJ Williams and go ahead on a bucket from junior guard Tony Webb. Two Bulldog free-throws from Alex Henderson, however, tied the game at 32 going into the half.

Southern came out of the locker room on fire and the tie soon turned into a ten point advantage (45-35) after a layup from Webb at the 16 minute mark. The lead grew to 20 (60-40) after a three from senior guard Tyler Ryerson and moved to 21 (69-48) after a pair of free throws from junior forward Vincent Ateba with 5:33 left to go in the game.

Senior forward Octavius Hawkins led the Lions with 17 points on 7-11 shooting from the field and 3-4 from the free-throw line. He had six rebounds and two steals. Webb scored 16, while Ateba pitched in 12. Both freshman guard Skyler Bowlin and Monroe scored nine. Monroe had a game-high nine boards.

The Lions scored 29 points off of 24 Bulldog turnovers. Henderson led the scoring attack for Truman with 13 points. Nick Certa added 11.

Southern, for the time being, is all alone in second place in the MIAA, just a half a game behind SBU.

The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday, February 6, playing host to Washburn at 7:30 pm in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
