Ateba's double-double leads Lions to 82-74 win at Washburn

 For the first time in thirty years, both the Missouri Southern men's and women's teams have come away from Topeka with wins on the same night as the Lion men defeated Washburn, 82-74 tonight in Lee Arena. Earlier in the night, the Southern women, won 69-61.

The last time both men's and women's teams won in Topeka was January 27, 1978 when the women won 56-55, and the men were victorious 76-70. Head coach Robert Corn was a member of the team that night.

Southern (12-6, 6-3 MIAA) started hot and raced to an 8-0 lead behind five early points from Skyler Bowlin. Bowlin hit point number seven to make the score 10-3 with 16:10 left in the half. A three point play from Vincent Ateba made the Southern lead 17-3 with 13:47 left.

Washburn (11-7, 3-6 MIAA) went on a 7-0 run to bring the score to 17-10 at the 12 minute media timeout before a bucket from Tyler Ryerson stopped the Ichabod run. The Lions would shoot 45 percent from the field in the half and go in the locker room with a 37-32 lead.

Southern led the entire second half as well as the entire game, and a layup from Ateba with 1:27 left made the Lions lead 75-64. Ryerson and Britton went 7-8 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game to help the Lions secure the 82-74 win.

Ateba led all scorers with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He went 7-10 from the field. Ryerson was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line and scored 16 on the night. Webb scored 15 and Bowlin chipped in 13.

The Lions shot 56 percent from the field in the second half and 50 percent in the game. Southern forced 23 turnovers and scored 24 points off the Ichabod miscues.

Both men's and women's teams led from start to finish tonight.

The Lions will be back in action this Saturday when they come home to play host to Truman State at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Tip off is slated for 3 pm.
