FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 2, 2008 Lions Pick Up Conference Win With 70-57 Victory At Truman Box Score Kirksville, Mo. - TJ Britton went 8-10 from the field, scoring 17 points and pulling down six boards in helping the Missouri Southern Lions to a 70-57 win over Truman State in the team's MIAA opener tonight in Kirksville. Southern (7-3, 1-0 MIAA) took its first lead of the game (12-10) on a jumper from Vincent Ateba five minutes in. The lead was 11 after a layup from Skyler Bowlin and Octavius Hawkins made the lead 12 with a jumper as time expired in the first half. Truman (1-9, 0-1 MIAA) cut the Southern lead to four (40-36) at the 14 minute mark, but Britton took the game into his own hands at that point. The senior went on a 7-0 run of his own, capped off with a three pointer to push the Lions' lead to 11 (47-36) with just under 12 minutes left. The Southern lead grew to 17 (66-49) after a three pointer from Matt Monroe with four minutes to go and Hawkins gave the Lions their largest lead of the game (19) just one minute later with a jumper to make the score 68-49. Tony Webb led the Lions with 18 points in 30 minutes of play tonight. Britton had 17 points, while Monroe scored nine, all in the second half, off the bench. Ateba and Hawkins both scored eight. The Lions shot 46 percent from the field and forced 21 Truman turnovers, scoring 28 points off the Bulldog miscues. Southern will now come home to play host to Missouri Western this Saturday, January 5. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 pm in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. |
