FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 30, 2006 Late run lifts Missouri Western over the Lions, 84-71 Box Score St. Joseph, Mo. - The Missouri Southern basketball team took a 61-60 lead with 7:33 left in the game, but a 24-10 run from Missouri Western lifted the Griffons to an 84-71 win over the Lions tonight in St. Joseph. Southern (5-6, 0-2 MIAA) had a two point lead, 13-11 with 14 minutes left in the first half after a jumper from Ed Miles (Dallas, Texas). The Griffons, however, reeled off a 18-1 run over the next seven minutes to take a 29-14 lead. A three pointer from Daniel Hurst (Hot Springs, Ark.) on the next possession sparked the Lions' own 15-0 run to cut the lead to just one at 29-28 with 3:45 left. Western (8-3, 1-1 MIAA) would take a two point lead, 36-34, into the locker room. The Griffons shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, but Southern got 10 points in eight minutes from Hurst. The freshman went 2-3 from long range and was 4-5 from the free-throw line. Both teams would jockey for a solid advantage in the second half, with Western's lead pushing eight points at the 11 minute mark on a layup from Brian Videau. From that point, the Lions went on a 9-0 run capped by a layup from Stanley Titsworth (Muskogee, Okla.) to take a 61-60 lead. The Griffons would end the game, however, on a 24-10 run to take their first MIAA win of the year. Hurst and Titsworth both finished with 15 points and three three-pointers. The 15 points for Hurst is a career-high as well as the 23 minutes played. Deonte Cox (St. Louis, Mo.) had 14 points and four rebounds on 6-12 shooting. Western's Joe Manthe led all scorers with 16 points as four Griffons scored in double-figures. Western scored 30 points off of 16 Southern turnovers. The Griffons had 17 offensive rebounds, ten of which in the second half, leading to 23 second-chance points. They shot 54 percent from the field, while the Lions shot a respectable 46 percent. The Lions will be back in action this Wednesday night when they travel to Pittsburg State for the Del Rio Bordertown Battle. Tip off is slated for 7:30 pm.
