Southern uses strong second-half and rolls past Living the Dream

Deonte Cox (St. Louis, MO/Forrest Park CC) scored 25 points and added seven rebounds on 12-12 from the floor and the Missouri Southern Lions outscored Living the Dream by 21 in the second half to cruise to a 89-64 victory at Leggett & Platt Athletic Center tonight.

The Lions were up just 34-30 at the half as Living the Dream scored 11 points off of 10 Southern turnovers. Myron Hodge (Evansville, Ind./Frank Phillips) had 14 points and eight rebounds at the half. The Lions shot 40 percent from the field in the half.

Southern came out of the gate and started the second half on fire, opening up a 12 point lead after going on a 12-4 run to start the half. The Lions then went on a 30-16 run capped off by two free throws from Daniel Hurst (Hot Springs, Ark./Lake Hamilton HS) to make the lead 26. The lead would get as high as 31 after a layup from Cox.

Cox had a game-high 25 points. Hodge finished with 14 and a game-high nine boards. Joey Savage (Good Pine, La./Bossier Parrish CC) and Stanley Tittsworth (Muskogee, Okla./Clarendon College) each had nine points. Matt Habermehl (Independence, Mo./William Christman HS) added seven and TJ Britton (Poplar Bluff, Mo./Mineral Area College) and Dale Hunter (Joplin, Mo./St. Mary's College) had six points each. 

Former Lion Matt Olson, as well as Cameron Ledford led Living the Dream with 11 points each.

Southern held a sizable advantage in the paint, outscoring Living the Dream 46-28. The Lions scored 26 points off of 22 LTG turnovers and led from wire-to-wire.

The Lions will open the regular season this Wednesday, November 15, playing host to the University of Missouri - St. Louis at 7 p.m. in Leggett & Platt.
