Lions sign Illinois prep standout during initial signing period

Joplin, Mo. -  Missouri Southern basketball coach Robert Corn has announced the signing of Plainfield Central (Ill.) HS center Christopher Scruggs to a national letter of intent to play for the Lions beginning in the fall of 2007.

Scruggs, a 6'5, 235 pound center played his first three years of high school basketball at Hazelwood East High School in St. Louis, before transferring to Plainfield Central HS in Plainfield, Illinois for his senior campaign.

While at Hazelwood East, Scruggs played for coach Ron Banks and averaged 9.7 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 49 percent from the field. He was an all-conference selection and led the conference in rebounding and blocks.

Scruggs played at Plainfield Central for coach Dave Stephens.

"I think Chris has tremendous upside," Corn said. "Every time you bring in a high school big guy, you want to see if they can make progress to being productive in your system. I think Chris has the abilities to succeed with us. I think the fact that he moved in between his junior and senior years and still managed to play at a high level speaks volumes about his character."

Corn thinks that Scruggs will  have the opportunity to come in and play right away.

"With the addition of the guys we signed in the fall (Skyler Bowlin, TJ Williams), as well as a redshirt in Kyle Schragge coming back, I think the future of the program is bright," Corn said.

Corn said he expects to sign four more players.
