FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 3, 2007 First-half run lifts Fort Hays to 89-61 win over Missouri Southern Box Score Hays, Kan. - Missouri Southern was up 16-7 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half, but Fort Hays State went on a 32-3 run to end the half and the Lions would never recover, falling 89-61 on the road at Fort Hays State tonight. Southern ( 9-12, 4-8 MIAA) sits alone in seventh place in the league one game behind Pittsburg State and a game in front of Fort Hays. A three pointer from Stanley Titsworth (Muskogee, Okla.) gave the Lions a 16-7 lead at the 12:17 mark of the first half. However, Fort Hays (10-11, 3-9 MIAA) went on a 20-0 run over the next seven minutes before a layup from Ed Miles (Dallas, Texas) briefly stopped the run. The Lions would get just one free throw from Tyler Ryerson (Willard, Mo.) over the next five minutes and went into the locker room, trailing 39-19. A jumper from Titsworth three minutes into the second half cut the lead to 19 (44-25), but that would be as close as the Lions would get. Hays pushed its lead to as much as 36 twice. TJ Britton (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) led the Lions with 13 points and 10 rebounds, going 5-6 from the field, 1-1 from long range and 2-3 from the free throw line. Deonte Cox (St. Louis, Mo.) had 10 points on 5-7 shooting. Dale Hunter (Seneca, Mo.) had eight points off the bench, while Miles scored seven. The Lions out rebounded the Tigers 34-27 and shot 47 percent from the field. But 27 Southern turnovers led to 35 Fort Hays points and the Tigers shot lights-out hitting 54 percent from the field and 52 percent from long range. The Tigers' Alex Davenport led all scorers with 27 points on 10-12 shooting and 4-6 from the three point line. Southern will be back in action this Wednesday night when they play host to Emporia State at 7:30 pm in Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
