Lions win first road contest of the year, 79-70 at Washburn

Topeka, Kan. -  Missouri Southern scored the game's opening bucket and led throughout and won it's first road game of the season, 79-70 at Washburn tonight.

Southern (9-11, 4-7 MIAA) won for just the first time since 1993 in Topeka. The win also marks the first time since that very season when the Lions have swept the season series with the Ichabods.

Ed Miles (Dallas, Texas) hit a layup and Deonte Cox (St. Louis, Mo.) followed it up with a layup of his own. TJ Britton (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) then gave the Lions a 6-0 lead after draining two free throws. The Lions led by as much as 12 after Matt Habermehl (Independence, Mo.) hit two free throws as time expired, giving the Lions a 38-26 lead at the break.

Washburn (7-13, 3-8 MIAA) was outscored 16-8 in the paint in the half and shot just 24 percent. The Ichabods turned the ball over seven times.

Washburn would go on a 7-2 run midway through the second half and cut the Lions' lead to just five at 52-47. Southern responded and went on an 8-0 run to push the lead to 13 with 7:34 left.

Miles led four Lions in double-figures with 15 points and seven rebounds. He was 7-12 from the free throw line and added three assists and a block. Cox and Stanley Titsworth (Muskogee, Okla.) had 14 points each, while Britton added 10.

The Lions shot 44 percent from the field and turned the ball over just 10 times. Washburn was led by Frank Phifer who had 12 points, nine rebounds and a school record seven blocks. The Ichabods had 10 blocks as a team.

Southern will now head to Hays, Kan. to take on Fort Hays State at 5 pm on Saturday.
