FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 27, 2007 Truman pulls away late and defeat Lions 76-68 Box Score Kirksville, Mo. - Missouri Southern had a one point lead with just under five minutes to go in the game, but a basket from Truman's Andy Calmes gave the Bulldogs a lead they wouldn't surrender and Southern fell on the road tonight, 76-68. Southern (8-11, 3-7 MIAA) fell behind by as much as six (22-16) early at the ten minute mark, but fought back and tied the game at 26 with 3:53 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs (12-7, 6-4 MIAA) then went on a 10-5 run to end the half and go into the locker room up 36-31. Truman battered the Lions in the paint in the first half, 18-4, but nine bench points for Southern kept the game in check. The Lions started the second half with a layup from Deonte Cox (St. Louis, Mo.) to cut the lead to three. Another layup from Cox cut it to one and a jumper from Cox, his third bucket in a row, gave the Lions a one point lead at the 18:32 mark of the half. The game would be tied twice more before a jumper from Cox with 11:24 left gave Southern its largest lead of the game at four (53-49). The game was tied three more times, before Southern held a slim advantage at 59-58 with just under five minutes after a pair of free throws from Daniel Hurst (Hot Springs, Ark.). Truman, however, would finish the game on a 18-9 run to put away the Lions. Cox finished with 20 points to lead four Lions in double-figures He was 9-10 from the field and pulled down five rebounds. Ed Miles (Dallas, Texas) had a great game with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Tyler Ryerson (Willard, Mo.) finished with 12 points and four assists. Hurst finished with 11 points on 3-4 shooting from long range. TJ Britton (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) had nine rebounds and six assists. Truman was led in scoring by Nick Certa who scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Three others scored in double figures. The Lions shot 44 percent from the field and 40 percent from the three-point line. For the second-consecutive game, Southern had a good showing at the charity stripe with 75 percent. Both teams took care of the ball extremely well with Southern turning the ball over just 11 times and Truman only committing four miscues. The Lions will remain on the road next week when they travel to both Washburn and Fort Hays State for two more crucial MIAA contests.
