Watts picked for honorable mention All-America
Lions basketball senior gets Division II Bulletin honor

Missouri Southern State University senior Ameer Watts (Rockford, Ill.) was one of two players from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association named to the Division II Bulletin All-America team, announced in the publication’s April issue.

Watts, a 5-foot-10 and 190-pound guard, was picked for honorable mention All-America laurels n the publication. He joined Northwest Missouri State University senior guard Kelvin Parker, a second-team selection, as the only two players from the MIAA receiving postseason honors from the publication. Watts and Parker were two of 50 players named on Division II Bulletin All-America teams.

“Ameer had a great two years for Missouri Southern,” said MSSU head coach Robert Corn. “We are very proud of all of the honors that he has earned, and he is certainly very deserving of this honor.”

As a senior in 2003-04, Watts led the MIAA in assists with an average of 5.32 per game, and also finished sixth in the conference with his team-leading 15.1 points per game average. A first-team All-MIAA pick in 2004, Watts also placed sixth in the conference in steals (1.61 pg), free throw percentage (.807) and assist-turnover ratio (1.80), while ranking seventh in the league with 2.14 three-pointers made per game.

He finished his career No. 2 on Southern’s all-time three-pointers made list with 127 over his brief two-year career. Watts also ranks fourth on the Lions career assists list with 315 and is fifth in career three-point accuracy (.393) and free throw percentage (.794).

Watts’ predecessor at point guard, Eddin Santiago, was the last Lion to earn All-America laurels. Santiago was a two-time Division II Bulletin All-America, including second-team honors as a senior in 2002.

Watts helped the Lions to their sixth straight berth in the MIAA postseason tournament and a 14-14 overall record in 2003-04.
