Lions add local basketball standout
Joplin High’s John Taylor heading to MSSU

Local product John Taylor, a 6-foot-4 guard from Joplin, has announced his intentions to attend Missouri Southern State University and play basketball with the Lions, head coach Robert Corn said.

Taylor comes to Southern after a standout prep career at Jopplin High School. As a senior, he averaged 12.8 points, 6.2 rebound and 3.6 assists en route to first-team All-Ozark Conference accolades. Taylor was also an all-area and all-district choice with the Eagles.

The son of David and Susan Taylor, he was a three-year starter and three-year letterwinner in basketball at JHS under coach Paul Colton. Taylor was named to the Kaminsky Classic All-Tournament team and the Ralph Miller All-Tournament squad.

He is the younger brother of current Lions baseball player Jeff Taylor.

Taylor joins four others in Corn’s latest recruiting class. Since the April 14 signing date, guards Quentin Edwards (Peoria, Ill.), Daron Harris (St. Louis, Mo.) and Jeremy McCadney (Union City, Tenn.) announced their intentions to attend Missouri Southern. Point guard Tyler Ryerson (Willard, Mo.) signed with the Lions during the November early-signing period.

Missouri Southern, which began the 2004 season as one of the top 30 winningest NCAA Division II teams this decade, finished 14-14 in 2003-04. Southern made its sixth straight appearance in the MIAA postseason tournament, where it bowed out to eventual MIAA tourney champion and NCAA-II Elite Eight qualifier, Northwest Missouri State.

Corn finished the 2004 season, his 15th at the helm of the Lions, with a 238-184 (.564) career record.
