FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Quentin Edwards joins men’s
basketball squad
Head coach Robert Corn announced today that
Quentin Edwards, a guard from Peoria, Ill., has signed a national
letter-of-intent to continue his collegiate basketball career
at Missouri Southern State University.
“Quentin is a player that we’re
very pleased to have join the program,” Corn said.
“He’s a combo guard, meaning he’s got the
versatility to play the point or the two-guard positions. He
can do a number of different things very well and we look for
him to step in and help us out quickly.”
Edwards, 6-foot-3 and 185-pound guard, will
transfer from Illinois Central College, where he was a two-time
all-conference pick. As a sophomore, he averaged 13.1 points,
4.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.7 steals per game in leading
the Cougars to a 24-8 record. Edwards was a second-team
all-conference pick and a third-team all-region honoree after
the 2004 season.
As a freshman, Edwards averaged 12.5 points
and 3.2 rebounds and finished as runner-up for the Collegiate
Conference of Central Illinois Freshman of the Year award. He
earned second-team all-league accolades in his initial
campaign.
He finished his two-year career at ICC with
783 points (12.8 ppg), 221 rebounds (3.6 rpg), 168 assists (2.8
pg) and 94 steals (1.5 pg). He shot 52.3 percent from the
field, 38.6 percent from the three-point line and 72.9 percent
at the foul line during his stay with the Cougars.
Edwards prepped at Peoria (Ill.) High
School where he was a two-year starter for the Lions, whom he
helped to back-to-back regional championships.
Edwards joins point guard Tyler Ryerson (Willard,
Mo.) as the newest additions to the men’s basketball
program. Ryerson signed with the Lions during the November
early signing period.
Missouri Southern, which began the 2004
season as one of the top 30 winningest teams this decade,
finished 14-14 in 2003-04. Southern made its sixth straight
appearance in the MIAA postseason tournament, where it bowed
out to eventual MIAA tourney champion and NCAA Division II
Elite Eight qualifier, Northwest Missouri State.
Corn finished the 2004 season, his 15th at
the helm of the Lions, with a 238-184 (.564) career record.
