Fans invited to Meet the Lions on Thursday night

Fans of the Missouri Southern basketball teams will have a chance to catch a glimpse of the 2004-05 Lions squads on Thursday night, Oct. 28, at the "Meet the Lions Night" to be held at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on the Missouri Southern State University campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The event, sponsored by KODE-TV, gets underway at 5:30 p.m. with the serving of hot dogs and soft drinks. At 6 p.m., head coach Maryann Mitts leads her women's squad onto the floor for a scrimmage with a 30-minute running clock. The Missouri Southern men, under the direction of 16th-year head coach Robert Corn, will take to the floor following the women, and will also participate in a 30-minute running-clock scrimmage.

With the 2004-05 Meet the Lions Night scheduled so close to Halloween, all children are invited come dressed in their Halloween costumes for a costume contest that evening.

Players from both teams will be available for autographs and will hand out Halloween candy to all children.

The MSSU Dance Team will also entertain fans with a performance.

The 2004 basketball exhibition season gets under way a week later as the Missouri Southern men host the Chilean National Team at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4. The Southern women hold their first exhibition game on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m., hosting the Oklahoma Flyers.

The Lion men also play two more exhibition games before beginning the 2004-05 campaign in earnest. On Nov. 7, Southern travels to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale to take on the Salukis, three-time Missouri Valley Conference champion and an NCAA Division I Tournament qualifier in each of the last three seasons. The Lions then return home on Nov. 13 to host Livin’ the Dream in their final tune-up before the new season tips off. Livin’ the Dream is a traveling squad headed up by former MSSU Lion Brad Mann.

The 2004-05 season begins on Nov. 15 in a doubleheader at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. The Missouri Southern women start the night by hosting Northeastern State at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Lion men against Central Bible College, of Springfield, Mo.
