Box Score

JOPLIN, Mo. -- Truman G Austin Kirby scored on a short five-foot jumper with three seconds left, capping a 6-0 run in the final 1:04 as the No. 22 Bulldogs stole a late win, 68-67, Saturday (Feb. 18) over the Lions at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Truman (20-5, 10-4 MIAA) trailed by five points with 1:22 left. Down by three with 18 seconds to play, junior F Andy Calmes scored on a layup and drew a foul. He missed the free throw but Kirby tipped the ball out to midcourt where senior G Chip Sodemann ran down the loose ball. Sodemann dished to Calmes who missed a three-pointer with nine seconds showing, but junior C Grant Agbo won the battle for the offensive board.

That's when Kirby came up with his winning basket.

Southern (12-14, 5-10 MIAA) had one final chance, but sophomore G Tyler Ryerson's 20-foot runner missed and wouldn't have counted if it had gone in.

The Lions led through much of the game, including 32-25 at halftime, and had a nine-point advantage 2:55 into the second half. The Bulldogs closed the gap with a 14-3 run over the next 5:21 after a Kirby three-pointer. The final 12:25 of the game featured 11 lead changes and two ties.

Led by 10 early points from senior G Quentin Edwards, Missouri Southern started the game by outscoring the Bulldogs 16-8. However, a Sodemann layup with 4:41 left before halftime knotted the score at 21. The Lions outscored TSU 11-4 over the final 3:43, highlighted by a pair of dunks from senior F Jeremy McCadney.

Senior G Derek Lindsey, who had 12 points in the first half, finished with 19 points to lead the Bulldogs. Calmes charted 17 points, including 15 after halftime, to go with 12 rebounds. Kirby and Agbo had 10 points apiece.

Southern got a game-high 23 points from Edwards in his final home game as a Lion. Junior F Myron Hodge added 14 points and led the team with six rebounds.
