Southern suffers 76-64 setback at Northwest Missouri State MARYVILLE, MO. -- Senior G Quentin Edwards scored a team-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, but Missouri Southern could not overcome a slow start and was defeated 76-64 at Northwest Missouri State Saturday (Feb. 11) in Maryville, Mo. The Bearcats scored the first eight points of the contest and increased the lead to 12 at 21-9 on a three-pointer from Mose Howard with 9:56 left in the first half. Northwest continued to expand the lead throughout the opening half and enjoyed their largest lead of the afternoon when Addae Houston knocked down a three to put the Bearcats on top 33-17 with 3:53 left in the first half. The Lions pulled to within 11 at halftime by ending the first half on a 7-2 run, capped by a pair of free throws from junior F Myron Hodge with 1:13 left before halftime. Southern trimmed the Northwest lead to seven points on three different occasions in the second half, the last being on a layup from Edwards with 3:38 remaining that made the score 62-55 in favor of Northwest. As was the case all afternoon, the Bearcats had an answer for each Lions charge as Houston connected on a three-pointer the next possession that pushed the Bearcat lead back to 10 at 65-55 with 3:29 left. Northwest did not allow Southern to get any closer than nine points after that. The loss negated a great day for the Lions on the boards. Southern out-rebounded the Bearcats 38-29 overall, with a 10-4 edge on the offensive glass. However, the Lions had a problem taking care of the basketball, with 15 turnovers that led to 25 points for Northwest. The Bearcats enjoyed a 14-point advantage in points off turnovers. Senior C Jeremie Bond joined Edwards in double-figures with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor for Southern. Howard led three Bearcats in double-figures with 21 points, including 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Houston and Xzavier Gaines also reached double-digit scoring with 15 points apiece. Missouri Southern will now prepare for the rematch of the season's first edition of the Del Rio Bordertown Battle against Pittsburg State Wednesday night (Feb. 15) at 7:30 p.m. at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. The Lions won the season's first contest by rallying from a 28-point second-half deficit to stun the Gorillas 86-84 on Jan. 11 in Pittsburg, Kan.
