Another poor shooting night dooms Lions JOPLIN, Mo. -- For the third time in their last five games, the Missouri Southern men's basketball team set a season low in field goal shooting. This time, the Lions shot just under 33 percent and dropped a 60-56 decision to the Washburn Ichabods Saturday (Jan. 21) at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Earlier this week, on Wednesday (Jan. 18) at Central Missouri State, Southern shot 34.7 percent. Saturday, MSSU made 17-of-52 (32.7 percent). Southern (9-9, 2-5 MIAA) trailed by 10 at halftime and by as many as 17 in the second half. Still, though, the Lions had a chance to win it late against a struggling Washburn team. With the Ichabods (8-9, 2-5) in front 41-26 four minutes into the second half, Missouri Southern went on a 10-0 run to pull within five with 9:39 to go. Washburn pushed it back up to nine points and stayed in front by at least three points over the next eight minutes. The Ichabods led by eight, 58-50, with two minutes on the clock. Southern outscored WU 6-0 over the next minute. Ed Miles hit a layup with 1:04 left. Tyler Ryerson connect on a short jumper with 48 seconds remaining to make it 58-54. Daron Harris scored on a fast-break layup with 38 seconds to go, trimming the deficit to two points. Washburn went 0-for-3 at the foul line in the final 55 seconds. After Harris' bucket with 38 seconds showing, a turnover gave the ball back to the Lions. Quentin Edwards missed a layup with 16 seconds to go, but an offensive board by Ryerson set up a potential winner from Harris at the top of the key. His three-pointer rimmed out, Washburn beat the MSSU press and got the clinching layup from Brady Sisk with four seconds to go. Missouri Southern made only 8-of-29 shots in the first half as Washburn went ahead to stay just 4:43 into the game on a Sisk jumper. A 9-2 WU burst over a five minute stretch late in the first period made it an eight point lead, 23-15, with 4:23 to go before the half. Sisk, coming off a career-high 32-point showing against Pittsburg State, pumped in 25 points in the win over the Lions. Dylan Channell and Kris Milburn each had 11 points. The Lions got 11 each from Myron Hodge and Ed Miles. Missouri Southern will return to action Tuesday at Southwest Baptist.
