Lions drop second straight MIAA contest KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- Truman State University won its seventh straight game and held Missouri Southern to a season-low 35 percent shooting en route to a 64-52 win over the Lions Saturday (Jan. 7) at Pershing Arena. After a tight first half that featured eight ties, the Bulldogs used a 7-0 spurt to take a 12-point lead, 40-28, early in the second half. TSU junior Austin Kirby sparked the run with five straight points. Southern (8-6, 1-2 MIAA) would quickly get back within six after a pair of free throws from senior Jeremy McCadney. But with under seven minutes left, the Bulldogs had the lead pushed back to 11 points. They ultimately led by as many as 15. Senior Chip Sodemann and junior Andy Calmes each scored nine second-half points for Truman. Sodemann hit six free throws in the final two minutes, helping Truman salt away the victory. Seniors Quentin Edwards and Dan Jones each had 11 points to lead the Lions, who scored a season-low 52 points while also charting low water marks in field goals (21), assists (6) and steals (3). Southern had only eight turnovers in the game, but made just 21-of-60 shots from the floor. The Bulldogs (13-2, 3-1) got 14 points and nine rebounds from Calmes. Sodemann and Grant Agbo, who also had nine rebounds, added 11 points apiece. Truman outscored the Lions 16-7 at the free throw line, as Missouri Southern made a paltry 43.8 percent at the stripe (7-of-16). The Lions return to action Wednesday (Jan. 11) in round 1 of the Del Rio Bordetown Battle at Pittsburg State University.
