Fall sports for 2004 set to kick off
Fall teams begin reporting soon

The 2004 fall sports season is rapidly approaching and several Missouri Southern State University squads will begin preseason drills in the coming days and weeks.

The Lion football team, under the direction of new head coach John Ware, reports on Wednesday (Aug. 4) and kicks off preseason drills the following day at 8:45 a.m. On most occasions in preseason (through Aug. 18), the Lions will practice at 8:45 a.m. each day. While the team will work on special teams each evening, its first true two-a-day practice is set for Aug. 10 with sessions scheduled for 8:45 a.m. and 4: 30 p.m. Ware’s charges have scrimmages scheduled for Aug. 13 and Aug. 18.

Ware makes his Southern debut as the Lions open at home with a 6 p.m. meeting on Aug. 26 against Bacone (Okla.). MSSU brought in more than 50 newcomers in 2004 to go with 29 returning letterwinners.

Volleyball, also under the direction of a new head coach, Chris Willis, reports on Aug. 9 and will have a short practice session that evening at 7 p.m. From there, the squad will have practices at approximately 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., although times may vary. Willis’ squad, which features several newcomers and two returning starters, begins the new season on Aug. 27-28 at the Harding (Ark.) Classic.

Second-year head coach Kiley Cirillo will bring his men’s soccer team to town on Aug. 11. The Lions will hold daily sessions at approximately 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the preseason. The MSSU contingent, now members of the fledgling Southwest Soccer Conference (SSC), kicks off the regular season at home vs. Missouri Valley on Sept. 1. The Lions return nine players from last year’s team which won five of its last 10 matches.

Trevor Wachsman’s women’s soccer team reports on Aug. 9 and will practice 8-10 a.m. daily and will follow varying 4-6 p.m. or 7-9 p.m. schedules in the evening. Wachsman starts his second season at the helm on Aug. 28 when the team, which features 15 newcomers, visits Wayne State (Neb.).

The MSSU cross country squads are slated to report on Aug. 18. Men’s golf and women’s tennis report when the fall semester begins on Aug. 23.
