Lions fall on the road at Missouri Western, 30-14

- Missouri Western scored 16 third quarter points to go up 30-7 en route to a 30-14 win today over the Missouri Southern football team at Spratt Stadium in St. Joseph.

Southern (5-4, 3-4 MIAA) took the game's opening kickoff and drove to the Western 16 yard line, but a 34 yard field goal attempt was no good.

Neither team would move the ball effectively, before Western (7-2, 5-2 MIAA) took a punt on the Southern 43 yard line with 3:23 remaining in the first. Two big pass plays from Drew Newhart led to a Tomas Hodges two yard rushing touchdown for the game's first score.

The Griffons went up 14-0 early in the second quarter when Adam Hinspeter's pass was intercepted at the Southern 11 yard line. Newhart would throw a touchdown pass to Andrew Mead for the score.

The Lions got their first touchdown of the game after Colin Bado caught a pass from Hinspeter in the end zone making the score 14-7 at the half. That drive was set up when Josh Woodard intercepted a Drew Newhart pass on the Western 34 yard line.

Western scored three times in the third quarter. First on a 21 yard field goal from Dustin Strickler to go up 17-7. The Griffons' Cedric Houston then ran back a punt 87 yards to go up 24-7. Their third score came on a pass from Newhart to Houston, but the point after failed.

Alley Broussard cut the lead to 30-14 when he rushed in for a three yard touchdown carry with 9:23 remaining in the game. Josh Woodard picked off his second pass of the game on the next possession, but Hinspeter threw two late interceptions, his last coming on the Lions last possession.

Hinspeter went 24-50 with 146 yards, 57 on the ground, and one touchdown, but he threw four costly interceptions. Broussard had 60 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown, while Bado caught 11 passes for 72 yards and a score.

Jordan Patton had a stellar day defensively, with four tackles, a forced fumble, an interception, a pass break up and a sack for a loss of ten yards. Antwan Dyer had nine tackles, while Jared Brawner had seven tackles and 2.5 sacks.

The Lions have intercepted 17 passes this season, the most since 1993 when Southern had 20. Patton has four picks on the season the most since 2005 when Jordan Chapman had six.

Southern will be back in action next Saturday, November 3 when the Lions play host to Truman State at 2 pm in Hughes Stadium. The matchup will be the final home game of the season for the Lions and will be Senior Day.
