Jared Brawner named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week

Overland Park, Kan. - After leading the Lions in tackles and helping Southern to a 17-16 win at Southwest Baptist this past Saturday, sophomore linebacker Jared Brawner has been named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office today.

Brawner a 6-1 Kirksville, Mo. native had eight tackles, including 1.5 for a loss against Southwest Baptist. He came up with a fumble recovery that led to a Brian Malette field goal in the first quarter. He then picked off a Steven Gaschette pass for a 46 yard interception return that led to Southern s first touchdown, a five yard strike from Adam Hinspeter to Anthon Aiono.

Brawner is second in the MIAA this year in tackles, averaging 9.2 per game.

The Lions will be back at home this week, playing host to Emporia State at Fred G. Hughes Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 6 pm.
