Lions miss chance for last second field goal and fall 14-13 at home to Washburn

Box Score

Joplin, MO -- The Missouri Southern football team had a 26-yard field goal lined up with 45 seconds left, but a high snap denied the attempt and Washburn escaped with a 14-13 victory at Hughes Field today.

The attempt could have capped a memorable day for the Lions (4-6, 2-6 MIAA) as junior receiver Colin Bado had 12 catches, giving him 164 for his career and breaking the Southern career mark of 158, previously held by Rod Smith.

The Lions got on the board first when Brian Malette nailed a 45 yard field goal with 8:12 left in the first to give Southern a 3-0 lead.

Washburn (6-4, 5-3 MIAA) answered back with two touchdown runs, a 34-yarder by Chris Brown, and a 5-yard scamper from Brandon Walker to give the Ichabods a 14-3 lead heading into the half.

The Ichabods had 212 yards at the half, but the Lions held Washburn to just 31 in the second half, limiting the 'Bods to just 22 yards passing and nine rushing.

Adam Hinspeter started the scoring for the Lions in the second half when he hooked up with Johnathon Terry on a 25-yard pass to cut the lead to four at 14-10.

Malette would add his second field goal of the day when he nailed a 27-yarder with 4:10 remaining in the game, and cut the score to 14-13.

On the ensuing possession, Malette pinned the kickoff inside the Washburn one yard line. The Ichabods went four and out and punter Ben Boswell got off a 31-yard punt to the Washburn 34 to set up the Lions final drive.

Hinspeter wasted little time and on second down, he completed a pass to Bado for 26 yards as the junior made an acrobatic catch for the first down. After two incomplete passes and a rush from Freddie Colbert, Malette was on for what could have been the game-winning kick. The snap, however was high and to the backside of the holder and the Lions never got the kick off, preserving the Ichabod win.

Southern out-gained Washburn 350-243 including 314-101 in passing. The Lions controlled the ball for nearly 35 minutes and were 6-16 on third down conversions.

Hinspeter threw for 314 yards and one touchdown on 29-47 passing. Bado had 12 catches for 134 yards, while Isaac Norman had 69 yards on seven catches. Terry added a touchdown on 37 yards. Brandon Hawkins had five punts for 176 yards including a long of 44 yards. Malette had two field goals and a point after, running his streak of PAT's to 29, one shy of the school record.

Jordan Chapman had eight tackles in his last game at Hughes Stadium. BJ Russow had seven tackles, a forced fumble, two sacks and two quarterback hurries.

The Lions will head to Emporia State next week for the season finale as they take on the Hornets at 1 p.m. in Emporia.
