Lions hold 2nd ranked Northwest Missouri scoreless in second half, but fall to the Bearcats, 24-7

Joplin, MO -- Missouri Southern went down 24-0 early in the second quarter and despite holding Northwest Missouri to just 2 first downs in the second half, fell 24-7 to the second ranked Bearcats tonight at Hughes Stadium.

Southern (3-2, 1-2 MIAA) scored on a 38 yard pass from Adam Hinspeter to Noah Harding with 5:33 remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 24-7. The catch was Harding's first career touchdown and capped off a four play, 59 yard drive.

Neither team scored in the second half as Southern held a 7-2 advantage in first downs. Southern's defense was at its best limiting the Bearcats to just 59 yards.

Northwest (5-0, 3-0 MIAA) stays perfect on the season and remains in a first-place tie atop the MIAA with Washburn. Quarterback Josh Mathews was 11-22 for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Kendall Wright had a 68 yard punt return for a touchdown and kicker Tommy Frevert made a 22 yard field goal for the Bearcats' only other score.

Hinspeter was 26-42 for 211 yards and a touchdown, but threw two interceptions. Ronnell Newman had 33 yards on the ground, while Colin Bado had 50 in the air. Brandon Hawkins had five punts for 195 yards, including a long of 48. Kicker Brian Malette stayed perfect on the year going 1-1 in pat's.

Devin Rutledge was all over the field for the Lions. He had five tackles, four solo, including two for a loss. Rutledge added forced fumble, a sack and three pass breakups. Jordan Chapman and Ben Augustin each had nine tackles with Augustin blocking a field goal attempt in the first quarter. Johnny Berry and Kyle Mayden each recovered a fumble. Berry also forced one himself.

The Lions led in time of possession with a 33:11 - 26:49 margin, including handling the ball for more than ten minutes in the third quarter. Southern was 7-17 in third down conversions and was 1-4 in fourth down tries.

The Lions will travel to Kirksville next week to take on the Bulldogs of Truman State at 2 p.m. A week after defeating Central Missouri 24-21 at home, the Bulldogs lost at Missouri Western 38-13 this week.
