Zach Caldwell named MIAA Player of the Week

Kansas CIty, Mo. - Missouri Southern junior left fielder Zach Caldwell has been named the MIAA's Player of the Week as announced by the league office today.

Caldwell, a 5-11 native of Pittsburg, Kan., is a graduate of St. Mary's Colgan High School and a transfer to Southern from Fort Scott Community College.

Caldwell had a stellar showing this past week hitting .583 and helping Southern post a 5-1 record.

Against SBU, Caldwell had one of seven Lions home runs on the day when he led off the second game of the double-header with a home run on the first pitch. In game two, he went 2-3 with a run, four RBIs, a double and a home run. Against the Bearcats, he went 4-6 with four RBIs, three runs, three doubles and a walk.

In day one against Pitt State, Caldwell lit up the Gorillas, going 8-11 in the double-header with a homer, five runs scored, four RBIs and three stolen bases. In the final two games, Caldwell added two hits, an RBI, a double and a stolen base. For the week, he hit .583 with 14 hits, nine RBIs, four doubles, two homers, four stolen bases and walked once.

This season, Caldwell is leading the Lions with a .400 batting average and 49 runs scored. He is second on the team with six homers and tied for third with 30 RBIs. He ranks seventh in the MIAA in hitting, third in runs scored and sixth in stolen bases.

The Lions have a non-conference tilt with Missouri S&T tomorrow night at home at 6 pm in Joe Becker Stadium, before hosting a four-game conference series with Northwest Missouri this weekend.
