FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joplin, Mo. - Missouri Southern pitcher Garrett Groom threw a complete-game six hitter and the Lions moved to 3-0 in conference play, defeating Truman, 7-1 tonight at Joe Becker Stadium in Joplin. Southern (9-6, 3-0 MIAA) Scored a run in the second, two in the fourth and two each in the sixth and seventh. Michael Zurmehly went 2-4 with three RBIs, while Trent Owens and Jacob Taylor had two hits each. Taylor had a triple and scored twice, while driving in a run, and Owens drove in two, scoring once with a double. Truman (1-13, 0-5 MIAA) got on top first when the Bulldogs scored a run in the second on an RBI double from Kenny Swanson scoring Matt Herrick. The Lions answered with a run in the second on an RBI from Zurmehly. Kenny Hart tripled down the right field line to score Taylor in the fourth and Zurmehly singled home Hart for the Lions' second run of the fourth. Taylor tripled home Justin Beal in the sixth and Zurmehly added his third RBI in the inning, driving home Taylor. Southern added two more runs in the seventh on a two-RBI double from Owens. Groom went the distance, striking out 10, while walking just one and scattering six hits. He allowed one unearned run. The Lions will continue the series with Truman with two games tomorrow at 1 pm at Joe Becker Stadium. |
