Bronchos score one in the ninth to slip by Lions, 6-5

Edmond, Okla. - The Central Oklahoma Bronchos snapped a 5-5 tie by scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Missouri Southern Lions 6-5 Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 24) in Edmond, Okla.

UCO's Jason Monko led off the ninth with a single and then advanced to second on a balk.  Andrew Foshee followed that with an RBI single that chased Monko home with the winning tally.

The Bronchos (6-7) jumped on top in the bottom of the second with three runs before Jacob Taylor and Derek Ezell each drove in a run in the third to make it a 3-2 game.

Brent Hodge led of the fourth for UCO with a single and then scored on a groundout by Nate Mitani to give the Bronchos a two-run advantage.

The Lions (6-6) took the lead with a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.  Justin Beal hit a one-run double in the sixth inning and later scored along with Gabe Wyatt for the go-ahead runs when Juan Hernandez reached on a fielding error.

Mitani helped the Bronchos even the score by hitting a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth that made it 5-5.

Lion starter Ryan Verfurth threw well, going six innings and allowing only three earned runs with four strikeouts.

Ezell went 2-5 and drove in a run for the Lions.

The Lions will begin MIAA action with a four-game weekend series against Missouri Western, beginning with a double-header Saturday afternoon (Feb. 28) at 1 p.m. at Joe Becker Stadium.
