Cameron strikes late to defeat Lions, 18-8

Box Score

Lawton, Okla. - The Missouri Southern Lions led 8-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Cameron Aggies took the lead with three in the seventh and then piled on eight more in the eighth for an 18-8 victory Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 17) in Lawton, Okla.  The game was called after eight innings due to the run rule.

The seventh inning got off to a shaky start for the Lions as Chris Caves began the inning with a single, went to third on a double by Thomas Dicker and then scored on a passed ball that tied the score.  Clint Powell then doubled home two runs to put the Aggies on top 10-8.

The eighth inning didn't start much better as the first three batters reached via either an error or a walk.  The Lions' second error of the inning produced two runs that made it a 12-8 Aggie lead.  Powell later hit a three-run homer that broke the game wide-open.

Nate Arevalo got the Aggies (9-2) going with the first of his two homers of the day, a two-run blast in the first inning.

Kenny Hart then tied the score for the Lions with his third homer of the season, a two-run shot after Trent Owens reached on an error to begin the inning.

The Lions (3-4) grabbed the lead in the third by tallying three runs that featured a run-scoring single from Owens and an RBI triple by Jacob Taylor.

Arevalo followed that with another two-run homer as part of a three-run Aggie third inning that tied the score at 5-5.

Southern again regained the lead on Michael Zurmehly's three-run homer in the fourth that put the Lions up 8-5.

The Aggies came within one on single tallies in the fourth and sixth innings before the explosion in the seventh and eighth frames.

Hart went 2-3, with a walk and two RBI for the Lions.

The Lions will be back at home for a weekend doubleheader with Minnesota-Duluth starting on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 20) at 1 p.m. at Joe Becker Stadium.
