FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions rallied from a 13-4 deficit with nine runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before Trent Owens put the Lions on top with a two-out solo homer in the eighth for a 14-13 lead heading into the ninth inning against the St. Cloud Huskies Friday afternoon (Feb. 13) at Joe Becker Stadium. The game was suspended in the ninth due to the umpires having a prior engagement. The Lions' big ninth inning rally was fueled by a three-run homer by Jacob Taylor and a three-run triple from Juan Hernandez. Zach Caldwell tied the score with a sacrifice fly and also doubled to lead off the inning. Owens also had a run-scoring double before scoring on a wild pitch. The game got off to a rough start for the Lions as the Huskies jumped on top with three runs in the second inning on a two-run shot from Tyler Horning and an RBI single by Nate Johnson. Kenny Hart got the Lions on the board with a towering homer off the scoreboard that made it 3-1 after two innings. The Huskies then took an 8-1 lead by exploding for five runs in the third fueled by a two-run double by Tom Erpenbach and a two-run single from Joe Kroc. Brandon Peyer also had a run-scoring single in the inning for SCSU. Southern trailed 9-1 when Caldwell hit a single that plated Hart that was followed by a bases-loaded walk by Derek Ezell that trimmed the lead to 9-3. The Husky lead was 9-4 when they scored four times in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by Sam Radbil and sacrifice flies from Johnson and Nate Hammes. Jeff Katchmar threw four effective innings in relief of starter Kevin Humphrey for the Lions. Katchmar allowed only two earned runs and struck out five. Drew Jenkins then came on for Katchmar and pitched an overpowering eighth inning by striking out the side. The conclusion of the game starting with the Huskies batting in the top of the ninth is set to begin at 1 p.m. The two squads will then play a pair of seven-inning games shortly after the finish. |
