Darnell signs two junior college transfers

Joplin, Mo. - Missouri Southern baseball coach Bryce Darnell has announced the addition of Garrett Groom and Zach Caldwell to his list of 2008 recruits joining the team for the 2009 baseball season.

Groom, a 6-1 190 pound right handed pitcher, is a native of Poteau, Okla. and played at Poteau High School, graduating in 2006. For the past two seasons, Groom has been a starting pitcher for Carl Albert State College in Oklahoma.

Groom had a 2.38 ERA in 68 innings in his freshman season at Carl Albert where he struck out 57 batters, walking just 21. This past season, he struck out 51 batters in 52.2 innings, while walking just 25.

A four-year starter for coach Ronnie Sockey at Poteau HS, Groom holds the school record for wins (11) and strikeouts (147) in a season. He also helped lead his team to a 2006 state tournament appearance.

Groom is the son of Wylin and Cindy Groom and plans to major in kinesiology at Southern. His uncle, Buddy, pitched in 786 games over 14 seasons in Major League Baseball with six different organizations.

Caldwell, a 5-11 188 pound outfielder, is a native of Pittsburg, Kansas where he played at St. Mary's Colgan High School, graduating in 2006. He spent the past two seasons at Fort Scott Community College where he was a first team All-Conference and All-Region pick in the outfield.

Caldwell started for three years in centerfield at Colgan for coach Mike Watt. A first-team All-State selection in baseball his senior season, Caldwell holds the Colgan single season records for batting average, stolen bases, runs scored and on base percentage. He helped Colgan to three straight state championships, while being named first team All-Conference in each of the 2004, 05, and 06 seasons.

Also a standout defensive back and running back for Colgan, Caldwell earned four letters, while being named first team All-State as a defensive back and honorable mention All-State as a running back.  Caldwell was a three-time All-Conference selection in football helping the Panthers to two state championships.
