Big innings lift Grand Valley over Southern, 17-5

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern baseball team went up 2-1 after three innings, but 15 runs over the fourth and fifth innings lifted eighth ranked Grand Valley State over the Lions, 17-5 today at Joe Becker Stadium.

Southern (1-9) scored runs in each of the first and third innings to take the early lead. Cliff Wheeler scored on a wild pitch in the first and later scored on an RBI single from Kenny Hart in the third.

Grand Valley (7-1) scored nine un earned runs in the fourth and fifth and added another run in the top of the seventh to go up 17-2 at that time.

The Lions added another run in the bottom half of the seventh when Skyler Rawlins scored after the Lakers turned a double-play. Southern added two more runs in the ninth when both Hart and Wheeler scored on a two run double from Alec French.

Wheeler had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-4 with a walk, and three runs scored. Hart was 3-3 with a run and an RBI. Ryan Estes started and went three and two thirds of an inning, while Jacob Garrison, Chris Green and Jeremy Bland pitched in relief.

Southern left ten on base today and committed seven errors in the field.

The Lions will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. to take on second ranked Ouachita Baptist on Saturday and Sunday.
