Lions break out with 15 runs in 15-2 win over Indianapolis

Box Score

Joplin, Mo. - Cliff Wheeler and Jeff Katchmar combined to drive in seven runs to lead the Missouri Southern Lions to a 15-2 win over the Indianapolis Greyhounds Monday afternoon (Mar. 10) at Joe Becker Stadium.

The Lions got on the board first when Gabe Wyatt singled to third, stole second and then crossed the plate on a failed pickoff attempt in the bottom of the first inning.

The Greyhounds (7-4) tied the score on a solo home run by Aryn Ross in the top of the second to even the score at 1-1.

Katchmar then put the Lions (2-12) up 4-1 with a three-run shot in the bottom of the third inning.

Southern scored three more runs the very next inning that featured a bases-loaded walk to Kenny Hart and a sacrifice fly from C.J. Matthews.

After Kyle Fisher hit an RBI single in the top of the sixth to bring the Greyhounds to within 7-2, the Lions exploded for eight runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a commanding 13-run lead.

The big blow of the inning was a grand slam by Wheeler that made it 15-2. Matthews and Skyler Rawlins also had RBI singles in the inning for the Lions.

With the Lions ahead 15-2, the game was called after seven innings due to the run rule.

Scotty Roberson picked up the win for Southern by going the full seven innings and allowing only two runs on six hits.

Wyatt and Rawlins also had three hits for the Lions.

The Lions will now begin MIAA action with a four-game series at Pittsburg State, beginning with a single contest on Friday night (Mar. 14) at 6 p.m.
