FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ten-run inning too much and Southern falls at Oral Roberts, 14-5
Box Score The Lions (0-1) were down 13-0 after three innings as ORU scored three in the second and 10 in the third. The Golden Eagles got all ten runs by way of the long ball with one grand slam, a three run bomb, as well as a two run homer. Southern bounced back, though, and scored four in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh. Kyle Cupp (Joplin, Mo.) doubled down the left field line to start the inning. Cliff Wheeler (Pittsburg, Kan.) reached on an infield single and Brett Velliquette (Katy, Tx) drove Cupp home with a single up the middle. A Juan Hernandez (Orlando, Fla.) single and Henry Adams )Berryville, Ark.) ground out scored two more. Matt Mantle (Pitcher, Okla.) singled home another. ORU (1-0) scored one more in the bottom of the seventh. Luke Lawver (Joplin, Mo.) singled home Scott Klassen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) for the Lions' fifth run. Hernandez went 2-4 with a run and an RBI, while Cupp was 2-3 with a run scored. Chris Farmer (North Kingston, RI) started for the Lions. Lucas Vestal (Springfield, Mo.) pitched four innings in relief and Kyle Knight (Webb City, Mo.) threw two scoreless innings allowing just one hit and striking out two. He faced just one batter over the minimum. Both teams will finish the series tomorrow with a 1 pm first pitch. |
