Southern drops
season finale, 9-1 at Pitt State

Pittsburg, Kan. - The Pittsburg State Gorillas salvaged one win in
the four-game series against Missouri Southern, knocking off the Lions
9-1 Sunday (May 6) in Pittsburg, Kan. But the Lions managed to win three
of four in head coach Warren Turner's final series of his 31-year career
at Southern.
Michael Campbell hit a solo home run in the second inning off of Lions'
starter Michael Meyer for the first run of the game.
The Gorillas added another tally in the fourth inning before Juan
Hernandez singled home Cliff Wheeler in the fifth to pull the Lions
(18-32, 11-24 MIAA) within 2-1.
But Luke Naccarato hit a solo blast in the bottom of the fifth, while
Kevin Deao had an RBI single and Brock Hampton hit a sacrifice fly as
the Gorillas jumped ahead 5-1 after five innings.
Pitt State (24-30, 15-20 MIAA) then tacked on a pair of runs in the
sixth and eighth innings for the eight-run victory.
PSU starter Bryson Clark was superb, lasting 8 2/3 innings and
surrendering only one run on six hits, with five strikeouts.
During his 31-year tenure, Turner won 852 games, while leading the Lions
to two Division II College World Series appearances and receiving a pair
of NCAA Division II Regional Coach of the Year awards in 1991 and 1992.
