FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Southern (16-31, 9-23 MIAA) opened up the scoring in the first when Luke Lawver singled up the middle to drive home Brett Velliquette. Pitt (23-28, 14-18 MIAA) answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Lions scored two more in the second when Justin Huether hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Matt Mantle. However, in the transition, the right fielder dropped the ball and threw wildly to second to allow Cliff Wheeler to score, as well. PSU answered back again, scoring two in the bottom of the third, as the teams would answer each other's punches. The Lions scored a run in the fourth on a homer from Kyle Cupp to go up 4-3, but Pitt scored to tie it up with a run in the bottom of the inning. The big blow came in the sixth inning when the Lions scored four times. Lawver and Henry Adams walked to start the inning. After two outs, Wheeler reached on an error by the second baseman to load the bases. The Gorilla catcher would then try to pick off Wheeler at first and throw down the line allowing Lawver to score. Huether followed that up with a three-run homer to left. Pitt scored a run in the eighth before Lawver and the Lions added two more in the ninth on a homer to left to go up 10-5. PSU would threaten with two more in the bottom of the ninth before Lawver moved from catcher to the mound and threw just one pitch to earn his second save of the year. Huether had just one hit in the game, but it was a big one. He scored once and drove in four. Lawver went 2-4 with two runs and three RBIs, while Cupp was 3-5 with a run and an RBI. Vestal threw eight innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing five runs to move to 5-4 on the season. The Lions and Pitt will face off tomorrow with two seven inning games beginning at 1 pm. |
