FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The two wins pushed the Lions overall record to 5-5 on the season. The Lions got the best of the Wolves 12-3 in the first game of the day behind a solid pitching performance from starter Scotty Roberson. Roberson earned the win after pitching six innings and giving up only three runs, with two earned on seven hits. Roberson held the Wolves to only one hit through the first four innings. Juan Hernandez provided the offensive punch, going 3-3 and driving in three runs. Hernandez drove in a run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly then sparked a five-run Lions seventh with a two-run single. Henry Adams drove in the first two Lions runs of the day with a pair of RBI groundouts. Adam Kampsen went 2-4 for Northern. Wolves starter Tyler Bauman got the loss by giving up eight runs, but only five earned in six innings pitched. Southern got another strong pitching performance in the second game from Andrew Doennig, who went seven innings and allowed only one earned on eight hits in a 7-3 win over the Morningside Mustangs. Hernandez scored the first run of the game on an error to give the Lions a 1-0 lead in the third. The Mustangs answered back with a run of their own on an RBI groundout from Jason Wysong. Brett Velliquette keyed a three-run Lions fourth with a two-run double that scored David Chaney and Justin Heuther that gave the Lions a 4-1 lead. Southern added a run in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Matt Mantle and two unearned runs in the sixth to go up 7-2 after the Mustangs scored a single tally in the bottom of the fifth inning. Morningside starter Wade Morrison went six innings and allowed seven runs, but only three earned runs. Missouri Southern will have a day off on Thursday (Mar. 8) before playing two games on Friday (Mar. 9) against No. 7-ranked Grand Valley State at 2 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. tilt against Morningside at Joe Becker Stadium. |
