Lions get two runs in sixth to defeat Morningside 9-7

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 7-7 tie and went on to defeat the Morningside (Iowa) Mustangs 9-7 Monday night in action at the Larry Hickey Classic at Joe Becker Stadium. The game was stopped after seven innings due to darkness.

Cliff Wheeler got the sixth started on the right note with a double, then came around to score when pinch hitter Kyle Cupp reached on an error.  Jeff Katchmar got the Lions second run of the inning home with a sacrifice fly that scored Cupp.

The Mustangs scored the game's initial two runs in the first on an RBI double by Jason Engleman and then Engleman later scored on a wild pitch.

The Lions (3-4) quickly answered with a single tally in the bottom of the first on a run-scoring double from Kyle Knight and broke through with four runs in the second and two more in the third.

Matt Mantle hit a two-run double that keyed the big second inning and then scored in the third on an RBI single by Wheeler.

Morningside made things interesting though by scoring one run in the fourth, and then were aided by three Southern errors in the fifth that helped them tally three runs that tied the game at 7-7.

Andrew Doennig pitched two innings and gave up no earned runs in relief of starter Chris Farmer to pick up the victory for the Lions.

Mustangs' reliever Chris Dicks received the loss by pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing three runs.

The Lions will continue action at the Larry Hickey Classic with a matchup against No. 7-ranked Grand Valley State at 5:30 p.m.
