Lions drop double-header at Emporia State

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

Joplin, Mo.
- The Emporia State Hornets wasted little time in getting started and defeated the Missouri Southern Lions 8-1 in game one and then made it a sweep with a 9-3 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon (Apr. 7) in Emporia, Kan.

The Hornets took command early with five runs in the first inning that saw the first six Hornets reach base against Lions starter Michael Meyer. The big hit of the inning was a three-run double by Nick Wolfe.

In all, Meyer gave up five runs on five hits in only two innings of work.

The Lions (12-19, 5-11 MIAA) scored their run in the fourth when Henry Adams singled home Juan Hernandez.

Trent Lare went the full seven innings for Emporia, giving up only the one run and striking out five.

Southern scored the first run of game two when Kyle Cupp drove home Scott Klassen with an RBI single with two out to put the Lions ahead 1-0 in the first inning.

MSSU hurler Scotty Roberson held the Hornets scoreless on only one hit through the first two frames, but ESU broke through with four runs in the bottom of the third. The Hornets tallied the four runs on the benefit of only two hits thanks to a Southern fielding error that led to three unearned runs.

The Lions came back with a single run in the fourth when Klassen drew a bases-loaded walk that plated Justin Huether.

But Emporia (18-14, 9-5 MIAA) responded when Chris Evans doubled with one out and came around to score on an RBI triple by Mark McBratney. The Hornets wound up with five runs in the inning that chased Roberson to go up 9-2.

Roberson lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs, four earned in the loss.

Brock Nehls got the win for Emporia by going five innings and allowing two runs and 10 hits.

Despite getting 16 hits, the Lions could do little to dent the scoreboard, leaving 16 runners on for the game.

The Lions and Hornets will play a doubleheader tommorow to wrap up the weekend series beginning at 1 p.m.
