St. Joseph, Mo. - The Missouri Western Griffons scored four runs in
the first inning to go on and defeat the Missouri Southern Lions 6-2 in
the first game of the doubleheader, then blanked Southern 17-0 in the
nightcap that was called after seven innings due to the run rule
Saturday (Apr. 21) in St. Joseph, Mo.
Adam Carolan keyed the Griffons' four-run first by hitting a three-run
double off Southern starting pitcher Lucas Vestal.
Western (21-20, 14-11 MIAA) added two more in the third before the Lions
broke through with their only two tallies in the sixth.
The second game saw the Griffons strike early and often against Lions'
hurler Matt Habermehl. Willie Forrest and Tommy Bone each drove in three
as Western plated three runs in the each of the first two innings and
then a single tally in the third and four more in the fourth.
Habermehl gave up nine runs in three innings, but only five earned.
Scotty Roberson came on in relief of Habermehl in the fourth and did not
fare much better, giving up six earned runs in two innings of work. But
the Lion pitchers did not get a lot of support from their defense, as
Southern (15-26, 8-18 MIAA) committed four errors in the second contest.
The Griffons hit four home runs in the nightcap, including solo shots
from Bone and Forrest. Vicente Rivera and Kellen Hobie hit two-run
homers in a six-run sixth inning for Western.
Billy Jones pitched six scoreless innings to pick up the win for MWSU.
The two schools will conclude their four-game weekend series with a nine
inning game tomorrow (Apr. 22) beginning at 1 p.m.
