Awards and Scholarships

ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIPS

The Alumni Association promotes continuing education through scholarships to incoming and current students. Each year the Missouri Southern Alumni Association provides seven scholarships.
Below are the scholarships that are available for application through the Financial Aid office.

  • One for the School of Business
  • One for the School of Technology
  • One for the School of Education
  • One for the School of Arts and Sciences
  • One for a Non-Traditional Student
  • Two for Legacies (Legacies are those whose parents attended MSSU, or the previous Joplin Junior College or Missouri Southern College.)

OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD

The Awards Committee of the MSSU Alumni Association presents the Outstanding Alumnus Award at the annual Awards Dinner during Homecoming.

Nominees must have completed their college work at least 10 years ago; have attained outstanding achievements in their chosen field; have made significant contributions to benefit their community, state or nation.

OUTSTANDING GRADUATE AWARD

The Outstanding Graduate Award is presented each year at the Honors Convocation. The award process begins with requesting nominations from the administration and faculty. The Alumni Association’s Awards Committee carefully reviews each nomination to select the Outstanding Graduate. Criteria for the selection includes nominees have:
1. Participated in a variety of campus activities.
2. Shown high standard of character and be well respected by peers and faculty.
3. Provided service to the college and evidence of leadership on campus and in the community.
4. Maintained an above average grade point standing.

LION-HEARTED AWARD

The Lion Hearted Award is presented to someone who is not a graduate of Joplin Junior College
or Missouri Southern State College or University. However, this person embodies the true heart
and soul of Lion Spirit and has made a significant contribution to the institution, either
through monetary or voluntary assistance.
