Am I required to attend Southern Welcome?

  • Freshmen: All first time freshmen are required to attend Southern Welcome
  • Transfer students: Transfer students can either attend the Transfer & Former student Southern Welcome or enroll in the department of their major.

What happens during Southern Welcome?

  • Hear from and meet with a Financial Aid Counselor
  • Process your Lion Card picture ID and parking permit
  • Learn about your student e-mail account
  • Learn about your billing statement
  • Find out about deadlines on tuition and fees
  • Learn about essential support services
 
  • Meet with an academic advisor to enroll for next semester’s classes
  • Tour of residence life facilities

Should my family attend?

We encourage you to bring your family to Southern Welcome. We want to welcome your family as well. We have a special program planned for families which runs concurrently with the student program. Some of the activities will have both students and guests together. Families and guests will have an opportunity to:

  • Meet and talk with other families
  • Attend sessions on topics such as family and the freshman year
  • Hear about student support services
  • Meet their students’ academic dean
  • Ask questions
  • Talk about money matters

Is there a fee for attending Southern Welcome?

A $50.00 Orientation fee will be billed to each student’s account to cover programming and other First-Year Experience materials.

Is there a fee for my family/guests?

Yes, there is a $10 programming fee for each parent/guest, collected during check-in. Guest Programming is only offered during the April, May, June and July sessions

Will lunch be provided?

  • Freshman Programming: Lunch will be provided for both students and guests. Student lunch fee is already included in the Orientation fee. Guest lunch fee is included in the $10 collected at check-in for programming.
  • Transfer and Former Students Programming: Snacks are provided for transfer and former student programming.

Where should I park?

Parking is available in front of Billingsly Student Center, just off of Newman Rd. Look for the Southern Welcome signs. You will not be ticketed if you park in the designated lots. Map of MSSU.

Why do I have to bring my immunization records and completed medical history form to Southern Welcome?

All students are required to provide a completed medical history form and a copy of their immunization records showing immunity to Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMRII).  If you don’t bring this to Southern Welcome, you can turn it in on your own to the Willcoxon Health Center prior to when school starts. All immunization records must be up-to-date and records on file before students are permitted to attend classes. If necessary, immunizations will be available by appointment at the Health Center by calling them at 417-625-9323 or e-mail the Health Center

Will I need to take Placement Exams?

Use the following guidelines for placement dealing with English Composition classes, math, and Biology

Placement into an English composition course is based on your ACT English score:
  • No ACT scores or ACT English score < 17: Eng. 80 Basic Composition or you may take Writing placement exam
  • ACT English score of ≥ 17-28: Eng. 101 (College Composition 1)
  • ACT English score of >28: Eng. 111 (Advanced College Composition 1)

Placement into a college level math course is based on your ACT math score:
  • No ACT score or ACT math score ≤ 18, placement will be in Math 020 (Beginning Algebra)
  • ACT math score of 19-21: Math 030 (Intermediate Algebra)
  • ACT math score of 22-26: Math 119, 120, 125, 130, 131, 135, or 140
  • ACT math score of > 26: Math 150 (Calculus with Analytic Geometry I)
  • Students can appeal math 20 or 30 placement by completing the math placement exam process. For more information on math placement guidelines and appealing your math course placement, check out www.mssu.edu/math/place.htm.
Biology Placement:

Biology 121 Human Anatomy and Physiology requires ACT composite score of 19 or higher or satisfactory score on Departmental Assessment (contact Biology Department – 417-625-9376) or Biology 70 with a grade of ‘C’ or better.

What do I need to do to get financial aid?

File your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) today at www.fafsa.gov, then contact the Financial Aid office at 417-625-9325, or finaid@mssu.edu. For more information, visit the Financial Aid office website at www.mssu.edu/finaid

Can I use my regular email account?

Now that you have been accepted as a Missouri Southern student, you have been assigned a MyMail student e-mail account which is used for all school related commu­nication. You have or will receive your e-mail address from our Information Technology Department. When you receive your e-mail address, you will need to activate it in order to use it. Steps for activating your MyMail account are located under the IT Department website at http://it.mssu.edu/index.php/student-faqs/mymail/12-mymail-login-guide.

What is Lionet?

Lionet is your online student portal with your personal and academic information provided by MSSU. MSSU uses Lionet to store and disseminate academic information to students such as transcripts, student account balances, class schedule, booklists, Financial Aid information, final grades, news and events, etc. Signing up into Lionet requires your MSSU student ID number (S#) and Pin #. If you have difficulty signing into your Lionet account, contact the MSSU IT office at 417-659-4444

Where can I find information about textbooks for my classes?

Textbook infor­mation for all classes can be found at the MSSU bookstore. After enrolling, a stu­dent’s booklist will show up on their Lionet account. The booklist will specify the required textbooks requested for the classes enrolled. MSSU operates a $10 per credit textbook rental program for most of its courses. Some courses may have additional purchase textbooks and materials as well.
